Matt Lengas is a professional oboist and educator living in south-central Minnesota. Matt has been teaching and performing professionally for nearly a decade. Having held positions in the Green Bay and Amarillo Symphony Orchestras, he has also performed with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, San Antonio Symphony, Quad Cities Symphony Orchestra, and the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra. Matt has attended numerous summer festivals, including the Banff Masterclasses for Winds and Strings, Round Top Festival Institute, Aspen Music Festival and School, and Hidden Valley Oboe Masterclasses. In September 2019 Matt served as visiting oboe professor at Bowling Green State University, and in 2015 he was invited to perform as guest Principal Oboe of the Lake Placid Sinfonietta. Matt currently maintains a large and diverse private teaching studio in Minnesota.
After completing a Bachelor’s degree at the Eastman School of Music and a Master’s degree at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, Matt earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Butler School of Music at the University of Texas at Austin. While pursuing his doctoral degree, he served as the UT-Austin Oboe Teaching Assistant. Matt’s primary teachers have included Andrea Gross Hixon, Richard Killmer, Robert Atherholt, and Andrew Parker.
In addition to teaching and performing, Matt enjoys perusing antique stores for vintage Arkansas novaculite sharpening stones, which he uses to maintain his reed knives. He also constantly tinkers with his gouging machines. Outside of his musical activities, Matt enjoys golfing, obsessing over coffee, and exploring the many thousands of lakes in Minnesota.
